E-mail Reference Questions

  • The Email a Librarian form goes to the refdesk@cofc.edu address, which is the account for the ref desk computers.

  • Please keep Outlook open on the ref desk computers. It can be open on both simultaneously without any problems.  Outlook opens automatically when the computer is started.

  • Remember to log your email reference transactions using the online form on the ref desk computer desktops!

  • After you reply to an email reference question, please delete the question from the inbox. (This will avoid duplicate answers, while a record of the transaction will still exist in the "Sent items" folder.)

Please use the patron's name in your greeting.

 

Take your time in answering and be as thorough and as detailed as you can.

  • Provide clear, complete instructions/directions as if the patron knows nothing about what you are explaining.

  • Provide a complete list of the resources you've checked.

  • Provide hotlinks to resources when available.

In closing your response:

  • Let the patron know that they can contact you again for further assistance if needed;

  • Thank them for using our virtual reference service; and

  • Give your name (your title is optional)
